Lesson Plan: The Dangers of Droughts
Estimated Time: 40 minutes
All life on Earth depends on a consistent and safe source of water. We can find water in the air as water vapor, or when it forms clouds and causes precipitation like rain or snow. On Earth's surface water can be found in the form of ice, snow, and running water on land and in the oceans. Water is even found below Earth's surface in the form of groundwater. But what happens when there isn’t enough water to support living things? A drought occurs when there is a lack of precipitation over an extended period of time due to factors such as less precipitation than needed for the area , changes in temperatures and human usage and management of water. In this lesson, students will engage in a scenario-based activity in order to explain and support an argument that the availability of water has direct impacts on living things.
