Lesson Plan: How Can We Hear Things Far Away?
Estimated Time: 50 minutes
Whether it's a family discussion at the dinner table, a loud car alarm down the street or the school bell ringing at the end of the day, our sense of hearing allows us to listen to and experience the world around us. But, how are we able to hear those sounds? Sound is created from the vibrations of objects. These vibrations travel through air, water or solid objects in the form of waves. Even far from the source, soundwaves can still be heard. As the vibrations from soundwaves enter our ears, we are able to hear the noise produced by the waves. In this lesson, students will carry out an investigation in order to explore how sounds can be heard from far away.
