In many ways the famous scientist Isaac Newton revolutionized our thoughts and understanding of the physical world through his development of the three laws of motion, which describe the forces that control the motions of objects. Specifically, Newton’s first law states that an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. An object in motion will stay in motion at the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. In this investigation, students will engage in an investigation to explain the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of objects.
